Guardian and threat, familiar and uncanny, a dog is a creature stationed at the threshold between the known and the unseen. What does it mean to see one in a dream? Could it be a premonition or warning?
The artists whose works are shown in the exhibition are connected above all as a community through hoast, an artist-run space in Vienna: as the people who run the space, as artists who have already exhibited there, or whose exhibition is scheduled for the coming year. In this sense, the exhibition also reflects hoast’s programmatic approach. Yet when artists curate, it is not necessarily a manifesto-like theme or a theoretical construct that is at stake. It is rather a feeling or a premonition that brings the works together. An exhibition exists before it has a title.
The exhibited works belong to a pictorial tradition in which human and animal pass into one another and the anthropomorphic becomes object. What we see are scenes that give philosophical concepts a visual form, that tip the familiar through unexpected encounters, and that withhold from figurative depictions their certainty.
During the opening there will be a Live performance of Marta Beauchamp.
