Who We Are

Liget Gallery, established in 1983 by the Cultural Centre of Zugló, is one of Budapest’s longest-standing nonprofit contemporary art galleries. Over the years, it has served as a vital experimental workshop for local and regional artists, providing a platform for creative expression beyond mainstream tendencies.

From 1983 until 2022, the gallery was guided by the visionary leadership of artist Tibor Várnagy. Through his leadership, Liget Gallery navigated the complexities of Hungary’s evolving socio-political landscape, from the dissolution of Kádár-era socialism to the emergence of new conservative ideologies. Várnagy’s ambitious programming showcased some of Hungary’s most progressive artists and fostered international collaborations, solidifying Liget Gallery’s reputation as a hub of artistic innovation in Central Europe.
Following Várnagy’s retirement, curator Veronika Molnár has assumed leadership, continuing Liget Gallery’s mission while adapting to contemporary challenges. With a focus on fostering new international collaborations and amplifying diverse perspectives, including feminist and ecocritical approaches, Molnár aims to sustain Liget Gallery’s legacy as a community-oriented space for artistic exploration.
Through exhibitions, workshops, and a strengthened social media presence, Liget Gallery remains committed to supporting both local and international artists, contributing to the vibrant cultural fabric of Budapest’s cultural landscape.
